Older and More Confident Readers

The headings for each title in this category also have the total number of pages as one measure of the challenge factor. Some books here will also be right for able and mature but slightly younger readers. Some will be demanding for many lower secondary pupils. The trick is to feed the interest age without going too far into the particular concerns of the almost 'young adult' years. Many boys and girls have a natural propensity to emulate those who are slightly older than themselves. There are so many good, demanding books waiting to be read that I always feel it is a pity for a really complex book to be read too soon. A young reader may read and enjoy the story of a book without taking in many of the inherent meanings. Then it's a case of "I've read that before" rather than meeting the book in a year or two, at a more ideal age.

Straightforward historical novels appear in the 'Times Past' section, as well as some with modern-past linkages. Michelle Pavers' book should probably be listed under 'Fantasy' but the images of the past she projects seem so real you want it to be true!
